OVHSA Meeting Minutes - JUNE 2024

  • President (Joelle Bernhard) 
    • A motion was brought to the floor to vote in the May Meeting Minutes, was 2nd, and the May Meeting Minutes were voted in.
    • 6th Grade Soccer Tournament
      •  1st ever co-ed elementary soccer tournament (6th grade only this year).   Winning team get a trophy for the year.  
      • Tuesday night at Foley Field.  
      • Please remind your students and family members to respect the playground equipment and garden.  A lot of repairs have been required; we just ask that the community help care for what we have created at the school!

          • Testing is now complete, thank you to all for your cooperation and patience as we administered state testing for the first time in three years.
        • Thank you to the entire Bloomfield Municipality for providing our students with such an informative, interactive, and positive Youth Government Day.
        • The Bloomfield Board of Education and Civil rights Commission are excited to announce the 4th Annual Juneteenth Commencement Ceremony!
          •  Join us on June 13, 2024, at 1:30 PM at Bloomfield High School, as we honor two outstanding students, dedicated community members/fathers, and one of our exceptional educators, who will be named this year's recipients of the Juneteenth Flame of Inspiration Award.
          • Throughout the week, we'll be sharing more details about each honoree leading up to the celebration.

        • Congratulations to our BHS Essex County Scholars- Sarah Hartland and Arnaldo Guerra. Sarah will attend Johns Hopkins University and Arnaldo will attend Harvard in the fall.   
        • BHS Seniors celebrated Prom this past week. Congratulations to our 2024 Prom King & Queen, Charles Lisa & Katelynn Thoma

      • Question about the Student Council Accomplishments.   Student Council helped paint the Giving Garden and used some money to buy the Little Library.
    • Planning for Next School Year!
      • Look out for details about pilot Robotics After School Program next year.  Students in upper grades were asked about interest. There will be 15 spots the hope is that students who are not involved in other enrichment will be involved.

      • Bike to School with Principal Lo and the Bloomfield Police Department, Wednesday, June 5th at 8am; the meeting spot will be at John’s Deli.
      • Before Arrival & After school—School supervision is not provided on the blacktop before 8:30AM or after 3:30PM.

    • Teacher Appreciation Week was great!  Teachers loved the "Buy Your Teacher a Lottery Ticket"
    • There is still teaching and curriculum taking place even as the year wraps up.

    • After School Explorers  
      • HUGE thanks to Kim Jamout for spearheading this program and bringing it back to life!  We have received lots of great feedback from parents, students and teachers, and it's all thanks to our chairperson and those who volunteered.  We are so grateful!
      • We have this in the budget for next year, so we hope to continue the program.  If you can, please volunteer to help keep it going!  We hope there will be a Fall session and Spring session. 
    • Playground
      • Installation is complete!  Thanks to all who helped get the new equipment installed!
      • There are a few more items to be added. Stay tuned.

      • June 25th, we will be officially gifting the playground to the BOE.          
    • Spirit Wear 
      • Store has been closed until September, order placed before closing should arrive before school ends.

    • Giving Garden
      • ABA and KG classes planted seeds in pots
      • 1st-6th grades planted some sensory plants and leftover plants from Someone Special.  
      • Thanks to our volunteers for contributing their time and talent, and supplies.   Thanks to the Hallenbeck family for undertaking the repairs needed and beautification!

    • Major Fundraiser  
      • Spring Cha-Ching gift card raffle drawing took place last week.  For actual earnings, please contact our treasurers. 
      • Next year will be Tricky Tray for major fundraiser.

      • Congratulations to our scholarship winners Sarah Hartland and Catherine Parelli!    
      • Need volunteers for next year!       
    • 6th Grade      
      • Graduation Party tomorrow, June 5th.      
      • Yearbooks order has been placed.  Yearbooks will be distributed at Yearbook Breakfast  on 6/17. 
      • Clap-out will be around 12:00pm on last day of school 6/25.

    • Enrichment Committee Surplus Proposal: 11 yea, 0 nay.  The proposal was passed. 
    • Robotics Program Proposal (Principal Lo): 11 yea, 0 nay. The proposal was passed. 
    • 2024-2025 Budget (OVHSA Executive Board): 11 yea, 0 nay.  The Budget was passed.  
  • New Business
    • Giving Garden Proposal (Maya): 
      • Requesting a $500 increase from surplus for Giving Garden for 2024-2025 school year. 
      • 11 yea, 0 nay.  The proposal was passed. 
    • Motion to move $2000 for "Special/Future Double Graduation" into surplus pool for 2024-2025 (Emily):
      • 10 yea, 0 nay.  The motion was passed. 
    • Class Party Budget (Jen Ingle): 
      • Motion to increase class party reimbursement budget to $3/student/party from surplus for 2024-2025 school year ($1584 total). 
      • 8 yea, 0 nay.  The motion was passed. 
    • Question about curriculum discussing Juneteenth and Pride Month.
      • Principal Lo: DEI Committee has drafted a Mission Statement that will be circulated to community.  Goals to elevate projects/resources to celebrate Juneteenth and Pride Month at Oak View.      
    • A motion was brought to the floor to end the June meeting, was 2nd. The June Meeting was closed.  Have a Great Summer!
