OVHSA Meeting Minutes - March 6th, 2024

    • A motion was brought to the floor to vote in the February meeting minutes, was seconded and the February minutes were moved into record.   
  • Board of Ed Rep (Kasey Dudley, not present; talking points delivered by Lauren Benech)  
    • District News
      • The district celebrated Read Across America Week this past week. Thank you to all who made this week such a great time at our schools.
        • Please be sure to check our district website and social media as a great time was had by all!
      • Schools across the district are celebrating the One Book Initiative: The Tales of Desparaux
        • Please be sure to check our district website and social media throughout the month and ask your children about the wonderful activities taking place in our schools.
      • ECC Registration
        • Early Childhood Center Applications for the 2024-2025 school year opens Wednesday March 1st.
        • Applications for Sept. 2024 will be open March 1st. You MUST fill out the paper application and submit. You cannot register online for this program.
      • Kindergarten Registration Night
        • Join us for an evening (3/13) designed to help parents prepare for and use the online registration system in PowerSchool. Kindergarten registration opens on March 18th. Find out what you need, how to create a parent account, and how to use the online registration system.
    • High School News
      • Congratulations to all Bloomfield wrestlers on a very successful season.
        • Heavyweight, Gabe McCulloch did not place but gave a valiant effort in his second trip to Atlantic City.
        • Congratulations to Leanna Noel for placing 5th at 145 this weekend at the NJSIAA wrestling State Championships.
        • Congratulations to Saharia Quamina for placing 5th in her weight class at the NJSIAA State Championship.
      • Congrats to all of our Winter Sports as they finish up their seasons
      • The BHS Thespian Society put on a fantastic play (Mean Girls). Congratulations to Mr. Doemling, the entire cast and the support that was shown this past weekend.

      • Oak View Highlights:
        • Oak View Tigers had an exceptional Read Across America Week, filed with excitement and learning. Unique guest readers added a touch of magic to our celebration, fostering a love for reading among our students.
        • A special thank you to the dedicated efforts of our Home and School Association (HSA), Oak View Tigers, engaged in a fantastic Scholastic Book Fair. This event provided students aces to a diverse array of books and supported our commitment to promoting literacy within the school community.
        • Our Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee recently had a constructive meeting with Dr. Gray from the NJEA to delve into the implementation of Restorative Practices. This initiative aims to enhance our school culture by complementing the Student Code of Conduct for the upcoming academic year.
        • Weekly Safety Team Meetings: Supporting our community's safety and well-being.
          • A special thank you to our HSA’s Health and Wellness Committee for partnering with EZRide and the Bloomfield Police Department for an informative Bike Safety Assembly for grades 4- 6 that was held on 3/1. Oak View families wil receive information from the HSA comite on how to register their children to use the new bike rack. We will have a bike rack grand opening at h end of the month, stay tuned for the flyer in virtual backpack.
        • Monthly Cafecito Chats with Families: 
          • A big thank you to the families that continue to join for a cafecito chat in person and virtually! Topics from last month included fire drills, school maintenance, and the K-2 curriculum.
          • Student Leadership: The Student Council, KKids, and the Sustainability Team continue to foster leadership skills among our students.

      • Discussion of sign-up and waiver for bike rack use and who will be managing the bike rack and sign-up.  To clarify, the HSA donated the bike rack, but will not be responsible for managing, maintaining, issues-related to, or scheduling sign-ups for the bike rack.  
      • Question about DEI Committee and members. 
  • Teacher Representative (Laurie Ritacco) 
    • Wingman students have been reading to younger grades.
    • ReadAThon was great, and wonderful that so many students participated.
    • Upper grades are preparing for testing.
    • Question about 6th grade substitute.  There is a new candidate, however, board approval is required at next board meeting.

    • Treasurers report and books are available for requiew
    • HSA is giving every student $10/each for field trips,  distributed through teachers.

    • Basketball 
      • Season is finishing up!
      • Family Basketball Night is  3/22.  Postscript: please get your tickets on our website!  Volunteers needed. 
    • Playground  
      • Working with Superintendent for assembly.  We may need families to help assemble. 
      • If you have any more suggestions for the playground, please let us know!
    • Enrichment   
      • Last assembly is Autism Awareness April 11th.  
    • Spirit Wear
      • Store is always open!
      • Please reach out with suggestions and feedback!  (Adult tie-dye is requested) (Request to make youth head holes bigger)    
    • Read-A-Thon
      • Class party winners are still ongoing
      • Very successful fundraiser--thank you to all families and teachers for their support  
    • Library  
      • Thanks to all volunteers, teachers and administration, and custodial staff. 
      • We are finalizing invoices
      • We are booking next years fair during Read Across America week. 
      • We received feedback about selection and layout and communicated that to our Scholastic Rep. 
      • The Library Committee continues to help clean up and organize the library for the remainder of the year. 
    • STREAM
      • Science Fair
        • 22 of 30 spots are filled.  Due date for titles is 3/7.
        • 8 spots left (grades 4-6).
        • Tickets will be available mid-March.
        • Volunteers needed!  
        • Emily of Emily's Wonderlab shared a message with our Science Fair students.  Thanks to Amy Burgan for donating her book to the school library!
      • After School Explorers
        • Classes will start in April.
        • There will be 4 classes offered (Dino Rocks K-4, Mad Scientists K-3, Brixology K-3, Pencil Works 3-6).  Each class only enrolls 20 students.  
        • Cost is determined by vendor costs.
        • Registration week of 3/12.
        • Volunteers needed!  Your child will automatically get a spot!    
    • Talent Show  
      • 40 acts!   Show might run long.  
      • Tickets available now!
      • Chairs need background music files. 
      • Dress in light layers--the gym is hot!
    • 6th Grade   
      • Graduation 
        • Party on 6/5
        • Graduation is 6/14. 
        • Clap out is last day of school.  
      • Yearbook   
        • Need kindergarten snapshot
        • Yearbook Breakfast 6/17.
        • KG celebration is 6/18 at 10:30am (subject to change).
