OVHSA Meeting Minutes - May 1st, 2024

    • Welcome
    • A motion was brought to the floor to vote in the April Meeting Minutes, was seconded, and passed.  The April Meeting Minutes were voted in.

    • Kindergarten Registration- now available online.

      • TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK (May 6-10)
      • NURSES WEEK IS NEXT WEEK (May 6-10) 
      • New Jersey High School Rankings Released 
        • The NJ high school rankings based on previously released performance report data were released this morning. Bloomfield High School has moved up 33 spots to 114 from last year's ranking of 147. In the last 2 years, we have moved up nearly 100 spots and are ahead of many schools we have been trailing since the rankings started in 2019. It's a great day to be a Bengal! 
        • Friday before Memorial Day (5/24/24) will NOW be off after not using all of our snow days. 
        • Welcome Ms. Viviana Rojas 
          • On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, Ms. Viviana Rojas was sworn into the Bloomfield Board of Education to fill the remainder of the term for the Board vacancy. We welcome Ms. Rojas and thank her for her future contributions to the board. 
        • NJSLA Testing has begun for all schools.  Please check your school’s website/social media for pertinent information. 
        • The Bloomfield Schools community participated in a “Night of Lights” where everyone lit it up red & blue in light of Autism Awareness. and acceptance 
        • Congratulations Berkeley on hosting a successful Mother’s Day Symposium the weekend of 4/27. 
        • All schools will be participating in “Maya Mondays” for a kindergarten student at Brookdale School.  Each school will wear pink as a sign of district-wide support for the Ci[prian family.

          • June 27th will be the 35th running of this race. 
        • Bravo to all of our Elementary School musicians and their teachers for amazing Spring Concerts. Thank you art teachers for the beautiful decorations! 
        • All Bloomfield Schools successfully celebrated “Take Your Child to Work Day” on 4/25.  All kids enjoyed being an honorary Bengal for the day!

        • The Bloomfield Education Foundation celebrated their annual hall of fame inductions at its annual Gala on 4/24. 
          • Be sure to follow their new Instagram page @BloomfieldEdFoundation 
        • All Bloomfield Schools celebrated Earth Day on 4/22 with various lessons, activities and initiatives. 
        • Thank you to William Paterson University for partnering with us to offer the Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program which provides working professionals an opportunity to attain their teaching certification. 
        • Congratulations Brielle Guimaraes - Bloomfield High School's 2024 Unsung Hero! 
        • “The Bloomfield School District is proud to announce that Mrs. Danielle Kelly, an exemplary and high-performing educator for the past 16 years, is not only the Carteret Teacher of the Year but has just been selected as the Bloomfield School District Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Kelly is an excellent educator, an important part of her school community, and assumes more than her share of responsibility for activities that further the total school program outside of the classroom. 
        • Bloomfield was proud to have the state teacher of the year, Joe Nappi visit Bloomfield Schools. Thank you to our resident county teacher of the year, Mr. Smashadeen Mayers for hosting!

      • Oak View Highlights:
        • NJSLA Testing is in full swing! Tigers are well-prepared and are doing a great job!
        • Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month kicked off today by engaging Oak View Tigers in morning announcements, lessons, and activities highlighting influential figures in the API community who have contributed to our society.
        • Family Nights at Oak View continue to bring Oak View families together for Cross-Curricular Adventures in ELA, Math, STEM, and Fitness!
          • Thank you to Mrs. Wright for leading tomorrow's Family Fitness Night! 
        • Lunch and Recess continue to bring out the Oak View Tiger energy!
          • K-Kids Kindergarten Buddy program pairs 6th graders and Kindergartners together for playtime on the playground.
          • Playground equipment is being built and placed in the playground area.  Additionally, picnic tables have been added to the Giving Garden area, creating a reading space for students!
          • Reminder for upper-grade students: as much as we love candy, please remind students that it does not belong at school.
        • Student Leadership: 
          • The Oak View Times 3rd grade student group continues to work tirelessly to me their publishing deadline. With dedication and enthusiasm, they are putting the finishing touches on the May edition, which is eagerly anticipated to be released on Friday, May 3rd!
          • Thanks to Frankie Jo Summa and Madeline Benech-Scales' leadership, Crafty Critters is going well!
          • K-Kids will host a Lost and Found pick up at the blacktop after school for the next two Fridays, 5/3 and 5/10!
          • The student council is preparing for the end-of-year wrap-up, including a celebration for the entire study body and a meeting with the BMS student council to forge forces and ideas for collaboration.
            • Given the cancelation of my March Board of Education presentation, I wish to recognize our outgoing SY2023-24 Student Council members during the upcoming June HSA meeting

      • Gift Card Raffle is up and running.  Tickets went home with each student. 
      • Tickets are $5. Unused tickets need to be returned please.

    • Scholarship
      • Committee completed their evaluation of submissions and winners were selected.
      • Winners will be announced at the BHS awards ceremony and at our June meeting.   
    • Someone Special Sale 
      • Friday, May 10th, students shop during the school day.  Please send students to school with a shoebox, some cash or a check made out to OVHSA.  
      • Volunteers needed on Wednesday May 8th for planting and to help with shopping on Friday May 10th! 
    • Spring Social 
      • Friday, May 17th, 7pm on the blacktop.  $10/family--please buy your tickets!
      • Free to incoming Kindergarten families
      • Movie is "Migration".  There will be movie, crafts, and food trucks. 
    • Fun Friday
      • June 7th, carnival during the school day.  Volunteers needed!

      • Chairs will be reaching out to Principal Lo about a planting day and looking over repairs needed at the garden.      
  • New Business  
    • Proposal for 2024-2025 Budget 
      • Presentation by Jenn and Mona about proposed budget and how the budget is organized. 
      • Question about surplus funds.
      • See proposal. This will be voted on at our June meeting. 
    • Proposal by Enrichment Committee
      • Enrichment Committee is requesting $2000 from surplus for assembly costs.  An average assembly costs about $1500  
      • See proposal.  This will be voted on at our June meeting.
    • Proposal by Principal Lo 
      • Principal Lo is requesting $1300 for pilot robotics program in collaboration with Watsessing Elementary School, BHS and BMS.  
      • Discussion of details: 15 students will be chosen, selection of students is TBD, probably for upper grades, 6-8 weeks after school, other funding, seperate from G&T, are kits reusable, etc.  See proposal.  
      • This will be voted on at our June meeting.    
      • Postscript 5/22/2024: Revised proposal from Principal Lo (BEF Grant for the Pilot Robotics Program has been approved and now includes the robotics kits
    • All proposals will be voted on at our June meeting.  1 vote per member dues-paying family.  voting must be done in person.  A motion was brought to the floor to end the May meeting, was seconded and the May meeting was concluded.
