Oak View HSA Meeting Minutes

Location: Oak View School – New Library

 

1. Call to Order / President Update (Jennifer Obiedzinski)

The meeting was called to order. Jenn opened the meeting and introduced the evening’s agenda, including committee updates, budget discussion, and upcoming volunteer recruitment efforts.

 

2. Board of Education Representative Update (Kerri Joyce) - unable to attend due to BEF gala - BOE updates in addendum below. 

 

3. Principal Update (Mrs. Fanning) – unable to attend due to BEF gala

 

4. Teacher Representative Update (Mrs. Ritacco) – expressed gratitude for teacher appreciation week

 

5. Vice President Update (Krystal Yip) - no updates to report at this time

 

6. Treasurer Report (Mona Kaur & Aileen Kakol) - The proposed budget was presented for review later in the meeting.

 

7. Recording Secretary (Kimberly Jaumot) - no updates to report

 

8. Corresponding Secretary (Courtney Crespo) – no updates to report

 

9. Committee Updates

 

Completed Events

·        STEAM Night (Erin / Kim) – did great, fun family night out, great attendance. Erin Hunt chaired and put on a wonderful event!

·        Color Run (Courtney) – successful event; lots of fun.

·        Kindness Carnival (Cammie) – always a hit with students; great feedback from school.

·        Light the Night (BOE support) – recommendations for future events included: attaching letter of instruction with bag; punching holes in bag for aesthetics.

 

Ongoing Committees

 

Teacher Appreciation (Jenn O / Krystal)

·        Continued planning of appreciation efforts for staff

·        Discussion of equitable allocation for all staff groups, including ABA and special area teachers

 

After School Explorers (Kim / Bridget)

·        No major updates – going well, ends on 5/15

 

Upcoming Events

 

Someone Special Sale (Krystal / Lisa)

·        Option to include optional donation system (Venmo) for students unable to contribute

·        Suggestion to make sure parents are aware through better communication  

 

Spring Social (Mona / Aileen)

·        Movie night under the start on 5/15

 

6th Grade Graduation / Yearbook

·        Upcoming car wash to help fund end of year party

 

FUN-Raising (Courtney / Cammie)

·        John’s deli fun-raiser coming soon

 

Gardening Committee (Sandra)

·        Chair stepping down due to time constraints

·        Planting Day scheduled for May 22 will proceed as planned

·        Materials and coordination already completed

 

Discussion points:

·        Need for new leadership or co-chairs

·        Potential shift toward a lower-maintenance garden model (flowers or reading garden)

·        Concerns about upkeep, watering logistics

·        Possible expansion of involvement to community groups, scouts, or school clubs

 

Additional ideas:

·        Transition toward community-supported or hybrid-maintenance model

 

Volunteer Recruitment / Coffee Social – May 31st 9-10am

·        A Sip and See event will be held to showcase HSA committees and encourage volunteer participation.

·        Focus is on recruiting new members due to several chair transitions next year.

·        Reinforced importance of increasing participation across committees

·        Emphasis on simplifying onboarding and clarifying expectations for new families

 

10. New Business

A. Budget Overview Discussion

 

Key points discussed:

·        Budget will be voted in with membership following the meeting

·        All funds remain within a single general operating budget

 

Adjustments discussed:

·        Teacher appreciation funding reviewed, including ABA class considerations

·        Potential reallocation of funds from other committee lines (e.g., Sunshine Committee)

 

B. Fundraising Structure Discussion

Key topics:

·        Clarification that funds cannot be restricted to specific causes (with limited exceptions such as graduation)

·        Reviewed and clarified structure of HSA budget as a single general fund

·        Fundraising supports all school-wide programming including assemblies and teacher appreciation

 

Discussion focused on improving clarity of HSA messaging.

Concerns raised:

·        Families often do not clearly understand how HSA funds are used

·        Confusion between “fundraising events” vs. “fee-based events”

 

Suggestions included:

·        Simplified written explanations for orientation packets

·        Clear definitions of fundraising structure

·        Inclusion of both QR codes and direct links on communications

·        Improved onboarding materials for new families

 

C. Major Fundraiser Proposals (Vote) - Two proposals were presented:

 

1. A Novel Night of Prizes

·        Bingo and literary-themed tricky tray hybrid event

·        Includes themed rounds, raffles, and prize structure

 

2. Roaring Twenties Casino Night

·        Casino-style event with professional gaming tables

·        Includes blackjack, poker, roulette, craps, and Texas Hold’em

·        Raffle system tied to gameplay winnings

·        Includes luxury prize elements and themed atmosphere

 

Vote Outcome

·        Motion called to vote on major fundraiser selection

·        Roaring Twenties Casino Night was approved as the 2026 Major Fundraiser

April 2026 HSA Talking Points 

? CONGRATULATIONS ? Ms. Jessica Barton Is the Bloomfield School District Teacher of the Year. ¦ Jessica Barton from Demarest School has been named our Bloomfield Public School District Teacher of the Year. ? Congratulations to BHS senior wrestler Saharia Quimona! After an incredible undefeated season and a NJ State Championship win, Saharia was recently crowned a National Champion at the tournament in Virginia Beach. We are so proud of your hard work and achievements! ? Congratulations to our Track & Field staff for being named the 2025-2026 Essex County Coaching Staff of the Year. Thank you for showing up and working hard each and every day for the student-athletes 
? DISTRICT ? Bloomfield Schools celebrated SEL Day on March 2. Students throughout the district engaged in a variety of meaningful lessons and hands-on activities designed to support social and emotional growth. ? All Bloomfield schools participated in the Sandy Hook Promise initiative, Say Something Week, the week of March 2-6. ? Bloomfield Schools celebrated Pi Day on 3/13. ? Bloomfield Schools celebrated Women's History Month through various lessons, activities and celebrations. ? Fine Arts students participated in the Townwide Music Festival at BHS on March 25. ? Spring concert season is here! Check the website for your school's schedule. A huge well done to everyone who has already performed! ? Bloomfield Schools participated in Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month at all schools. 

? High School ? We want to congratulate our seniors on their continued success as they receive acceptance letters from a wide range of colleges and universities. ¦ Congratulations to our students who have committed to trade schools or enlisted in the armed forces. We are incredibly proud of your dedication to these vital careers. ¦ We are proud of all of you as you begin your next journey. ? Congratulations to Barbara Albarracin, for being recognized as a 2026 Essex County Unsung Hero! Your dedication and impact do not go unnoticed. Well deserved. 

? Middle School ? Bloomfield Middle School celebrated Pi Day (3/13) . Check BMS social media for lots of fun pictures and videos captured that day. 

? Elementary News ? Bloomfield Schools celebrated our annual One Book Initiative this past month (A Boy Called Bat). It was a fun learning experience for our students and we thank the teachers and parents for their support. ? A huge thank you to Professor Kazoun and the College of Education at William Paterson University for sharing incredible artifacts with us to create an interactive museum in honor of the Negro Baseball League at Berkeley & Watsessing Schools. ? All schools celebrated Read Across America Week earlier this month. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our school media specialists for making it such an engaging and enjoyable experience for the entire community. ? Important Dates ?
