OVHSA Meeting Minutes, December 7th, 2022
  • A motion was brought to the floor to vote the November meeting minutes in.  The vote was passed and the December meeting began.
  • Principal (Mrs. DiTrani) 
    • Hispanic dance assembly was success 
    • Winter concert reminder: Tuesday, December 13th 1:30 (grades 1,2,5and 6)  Grades 3,4 will be in the Spring concert; KG will be in the step-up ceremony  
    • Caught with character was held last Friday 
    • Congrats to Zachary Budko on being the Fire Dept. poster contest winner! He was awarded a bike from Bloomfield FD 
    • Readathon was a huge success; was loved by all! 
    • The whole school is involved in World Cup Soccer watching; every grade level has teams, made posters, been following the competitions; the school even watched the USA vs. Iran match in the gym 
    • Congratulation to our district teachers of the year, Mrs. Daria Sisco and para professional Ms. Perry!
  • Board of Ed Rep (Ms. Monica Charris-Tabares not present; talking points read by Lauren Benech) 
    • On behalf of the entire Blomfield Board of Education and Administration, we would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and a hapy and healthy new year! We hope you enjoy the time of from schol and come back ready for the second half of the schol year! 
    • NO AFTER CARE December 23rd; please plan acordingly. 
    • Free ESL Clases: Blomfield Schol District is ofering free ESL adult Clases. Thank you to al those who are participating. 
    • Thespian Society: BHS Thespian Society sucesfuly completed the fall production of Everyman by Carol An Dufy. Congrats to the cast and crew on a great performance. 
    • NJSBA Spotlight: We are proud to anounce that the Twilight program at Blomfield High School has been featured in the NJSBA Board Notes online.  See the news story on our website for more information. 
    • 8th Grade Orientation at BHS: BHS held their anual 8th grade orientation.  Prospective BHS students and their families learned all about what our high school has to offer. 
    • Wingman Activities: All Blomfield schools continue to participate in our Wingman SEL Initiative which is mostly led by our student leaders districtwide.  Please see our website/social media for pictures and information. 
    • Parent teacher conferences were completed at all elementary schols as we head into our winter academic sessions. Thank you to all that participated. 
    • EC Dedication: The EC held a dedication ceremony to name their CST office in honor of Lauren Marek. 
    • Athletics- Good luck to all of our winter athletic teams, who are about to officialy begin their season. We are sure that all of our student athletes will continue to make us proud both on and of the competitive field.

    • Thank you to the HSA for providing treats in the staff room during PT conferences  
    • Readathon was wonderful - anything to get them reading more!

    • We hit our limit on emails last month, so an informal poll was taken to gauge the level of interest in migrating communication to a weekly email (Monday "what's ahead" and/or Friday "recap").  There would still be regular Facebook reminders and chairs would still be able to send out if needed, during the week.  This is still open.  Anyone wishing to voice their opinion can email me at: [email protected] 
  • Corresponding Secretary (Krystal Yip)          
    • Winter class parties are scheduled for Thursday, December 22nd.  
    • Party snack clarification:  There were lots of complaints about the approved snack food list or disregard of the  list at the Halloween party; class parents cannot serve anything during the class party, but can send home goody bags, and students can bring a snack from home
  • Committee Updates:      
    • Fall Fundraiser (Read-A-Thon)
      • Thanks to all who participated!  
      • Parties for winning classes are scheduled
      • The students read for a total of $339, 534 minutes!  
      • The school will net about $12, 550 (we fundraised $14,970.15; however there are fees associated with the interface). Final net amount forthcoming.

    •  Basketball (Emily Hallenbeck on behalf of chairs) 
      • Basketball practivces are underway, inlcuding 2nd & 3rd grade clinics running, 
      • Look for notices about the 1st game in January

    • Holiday Shop update (Krystal)

      • Mastrianos fundraiser earned $250 
      • Anthony's Cheesecake forms are due on Friday 12/09: check or cash in clearly labeled envelope     
      • Pick up is 12/21  
    • Thanksgiving food drive (Cammie)
      • The Health and Wellness collected food for the 2nd year, for St. Thomas'  food  pantry; the pantry was stocked to capacity
      • Thank you to all who donated!
      • Patrice Skerritt spoke on behalf of St. Thomas and thanked all who participated and chairs for corganizing
    • Toy Drive (Emily): 
      • Toys were delivered to Tice's toy drive on Sunday, filled to the brim!  Thank you all who supported this drive!
    • Enrichment (Krystal):    
      • Hispanic Heritage Dance assembly was this week

      • African Drum assemly in February

    • Talent Show (Peter Fiveland, Maya Kengeri) 
      • Registrations are coming in, 10 acts so far including class acts
      • Grades K, 2, 4, and 6 have registered a class act; we need  class acts from 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Please reach out if you are interested in volunteering to spearhead these class acts!
      • Themes selected probably in January;  once them is picked, we will send out a flyer 
    • Major Fundraiser (Kate) 
      • Live tricky tray is coming on April 6th at the Westmount Country Club 
      • Theme will involve kids art 
      • Class parents received an email for major fundraiser, there is an option to buy a class gift or venmo money to chairs to buy a super big gift  
      • Meeting with the committee took place this week, full steam ahead in Jaunuary 
      • Raffle prizes are needed ASAP as they require gaming permits, which could take months; open call for gifts from Oak View families, must be new in original box

    • 6th Grade 
      • Yearbook: 
        • Theme is forthcoming
        • Graduation: 
          • 6th graders are coming up with class theme, campaigning and voting this week
          • Introducing a new fundraiser this year, will be sent out in early January; 6th graders will be hosting a spaghetti dinner January 27th; there will be 2 seatings, both including very nice italian handmade meal (spaghetti, garlic knots, brownies) look for more info in January.
          • Graduation party id being planned for June 1st; students are designing class t-shirt design   
  • New Business 
    • Proposal to update the Bylaws (Emily);  Emily presented her screen and went through the proposed changes 
    • Proposal will be voted on in January 
    • Question about voting: will be voted on as a block as opposed to each line item.  However,  if anyone has an issue with any particular line item, they can be emailed to us or discussed at the January meeting prior to the vote. 
    • Proposal will be posted in office and circulated via email.
