OVHSA Meeting Minutes, February 1st, 2023
  • The meeting was held via Zoom.
  • A motion was brought to the floor to vote the January meeting minutes in.  The vote was passed and the February meeting began. 
  • Principal (Mrs. DiTrani) (talking points were sent post-meeting)
    • Excited for the talent show!  Thank you to all the parents involved in the class acts.  The students appear to be really enjoying it. 
    • Two Oak View students participated in the Essex County Forensics competition at Montclair State University under the direction of our coach Ms. Kelly Rennie. Congratulations to Eloise Wilson for winning first place and Madeline Cole for winning second place.  For Oak View to have the top two forensic competitors in the country is very special.  We are so proud of them! 
    • We also had winners  in the:  
      • 6th Grade Civil Rights Essay Contest - Madelyn Cole - Bloomfield 3rd Place Winner   
      • 6th Grade DAR Contest - Madelyn Cole - Bloomfield 2nd Place Winner                 
      • 5th Grade DAR Contest - Madison Scotto - Bloomfield 3rd Place Winner 
      • We are so proud of Madelyn and Madison and appreciate them entering these contests! 
    • We are celebrating Black History Month during the month of February.  Along with classroom activities with their teachers, students interested in sharing  important information regarding Black History are encouraged to meet with me to participate in school wide announcements. 
    • Our fifth grade teachers developed a wonderful SEL lesson where students created slides entitled "How to Lose Friends", and then followed it up with slides on "How to Make Friends".  All three classes participated and discussed the complex subject of friendships.  I appreciate our fifth grade teachers taking the time to explore this topic. 
    • Our teachers are planning our grade level class trips.  I have informed the teachers of the generosity of our HSA in contributing $12.00 per child of dues paying members and $6.00 per child for non paying members.  I have put this information in our February Newsletter. 
    • February is is a busy month with an African Drum assembly, Hundredth Day of School, Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, an author visit, Read Across America Week and a Book Fair!
    • During the month of February, the Bloomfield Middle School Principal will be visiting Oak View to talk with our sixth grade students about next year. 
    • Kindergarten Registration will open at the end of March.

  • Board of Ed Rep (Phyllis Gerber) 
    • Intro:  resident of Bloomfield, went though Bloomfield school system, proud to represent OVHSA!
    • February is Black History month, each school has planned activities
    • Schools across the district celebrated Lunar New Year 
    • The Superintendent sent out a letter addressing the recent hate crime at Temple Ner Tamid, copy of this letter is available on the district website. 
    • Early childhood registration applications for 2023-24 school year opens on March 1st
    • Applications for September 2023 are paper only, no online applications. 
    • Congrats to:
      • Kira Pimkins on 100th victory!
      • Those members of the BHS choir who were picked for the regional choir  
      • All Bloomfield Civil Rights essay contest winners
      • All DAR contest winners
      • BHS conducted a successful elective fair
      • Hall of Fame inductees reception on April 27th

    • This year, the 6th graders are doing morning announcements, everyone looks forward to it!
    • Teachers were very happy with Holiday Parties went, thank you to Class Parents!
    • Thank you for treats in the staff room last week!
    • Reminder to all students, including upper grades, please have students use the bathroom before they get to school 
    • Presidents Day: take the opportunity to wash backpacks, coats, hats and lunchboxes over long weekend

    • The meeting is being recorded 
    • February will be our last Zoom meeting; all meeting for the rest of the year will be in-person
    • Next meeting is Wednesday,March 1st  
    • Amazon is discontinuing their Smile program on February 20th.  If you need anything from Amazon, please set Oak View as your charity of choice between now and 2/20/2023

    • Class Valentine parties are scheduled for February 14th 
    • Class Parents, please look at the snack list from Mrs. LoMonte.  Regardless of allergies in your classroom, all snacks provided must be from Mrs. LoMonte's list.  Please email teachers and parents about what snacks are planned, so that parents have the opportunity to send in an alternate if they wish.

    • Thanks to all coaches and parents for a great season so far!
    • Parents, players, and spectators, please respect the facilities when you visit Oak View and Demarest schools for games, and please respect all players.   
  • Winter Social (Jenn O)
  • THIS Friday 2/3!    Wristbands going home 2/2/2023.
  • Ticket sales are now closed, but reach out to chairs if you missed the deadline.
  • Library (Kristen)  
    • Scholastic Book Fair is schedule for the first week of March.  We received the class shopping schedule from Mrs. DiTrani, and we will send out invitation to committee members to volunteer       
    • There will be 2 ways to donate books/money to your child's classroom, via the manual Teacher Wish List at the fair, or via the teacher's e-wallet.  More communication about this is forthcoming as we get closer to the opening of the book fair.    
  • FUNRaising (Cammie)    
    • We made $240 from Anthony's cheesecake--thank to all who participated!
    • Monday 2/6 is Dine-to-Donate at The Brookdale; We get 15% from your bill when you mention Oak View
    • Tuesday 2/21 is Dine-to-Donate at Popolari (orders must be placed DIRECTLY with Popolari, not through a 3rd party app)
    • Wednesday 3/8  is Dine-to-Donate at Bella Napoli      
  • Enrichment (Krystal)   
    •  2/8 African Drum Assembly
    •  2/21 Jason Patterson author visit, books that were ordered will be distributed on the day of the author visit 
    •  3/27 STEM assembly 
  • Talent Show (Peter) 
    • Registrations are still coming in but this is last call for new acts so they can be included in the program 
    • Ticket sales are expected to go live in a week or so 
    • Thanks to all parents for rehearsals and putting together all acts 
  • Major Fundraiser (Kate)   
    • Tricky Tray at the Westmount Country Club coming in April
    • Tickets will be $70 per person (includes admission, dinner, and 1-level ticket sheet) 
    • Sales and communication will launch on Friday 2/3/2023.
    • Due to NJ's strict gambling rules, purchase will not be through our online school store, but through a dedicated site
    • Open call for any for prizes or connections who can provide prizes (brand new and unused ONLY) 
  • 6th Grade (Kate)
    • Spaghetti dinner was a great success and a lot of fun!  The 6th graders served 148 diners with great service and a smile:)  They raised $4019 total, net $3184.  
    • Total goal for the year is $11k; so far they have raised $7829. 
    • Carwash is 3rd and final fundraiser, stay tuned. 
    • Theme is Unstoppable 
    • Aarianna Delphin designed winning class t-shirt, which went into production  
  • Nominations (Kristin/Mo) 
    • Elections are here for the 2023-2025 OVHSA Executive Board 
    • Nomination google form will go out on Friday, February 10th, and you will have 12 days
    • At our March meeting, we will have an idea of who is running, and then information about the nominees will be circulated
    • Rules for nominations: nominee has to be a member of the OVHSA, have to have a 4th grader or below. 
    • Nominees for President need to have successfully chaired or co-chaired a committee successfully prior to holding office.   • New Business 
    • A motion to make the Spring Social event free was proposed by Lauren Benech. See below.
