OVHSA Meeting Minutes, March 1st, 2023


  • A motion was brought to the floor to vote the February meeting minutes in.  The vote was passed and the March meeting began.  
  • Principal (Mrs. DiTrani) 
    • District-wide One Book Initiative, look for a family night coming up
    • Black History Month student announcements was a success and will be continuing announcement for Women's History Month
    • Essex County Environmental Center came to 3rd grade through a grant and did a recycling class
    • Congratulations to Caught With Character students (kindness theme)
    • Read Across America Week, lots of guest speakers
    • Next week is InView Cognitive test for 3rd & 6th grades
    • 3/14 are spring photos; these include sibling photos

    • RAA - check district website and social media for updates 
    • Celebrating the district-wide One Book Initiative: The World According to Humphrey
    • Early Childhood Center Registration
      • Applications for 2023-2024 school year opens on 3/1/2023
      • You MUST fill out the paper application and submit. You cannot register online for this program. 
    • Kindergarten registration 
      • Join us for an evening designed to help parents prepare for and use the online registration system in Power School.
      • KG registration opens on 3/20. 
    • Upcoming BOE Strategic Planning Meetings:
      • When: 3/2, 3/28, 4/18
      • Where: BHS Media Center
      • Time: 6:30-8:00pm
    • High School News:
      • Congrats to Kira Pipkins on her 100th victory and making it to the finals in the 126 lb. weight division.   Kire is the 1st female to accomplish this in BHS and state history!
      • Congrats to some of our other wrestlers: Ahlexa Montavlo, Saharia Quamina, Reno Prochilo, Madelyn McGlaughlin, Michael Marzano
      • Congrats to all winter sports as they finish up their seasons
      • The BHS Thespian Society is proud to present their annual Spring Play--look for info on district website
      • New Hall of Fame inductees reception 4/27 at 6pm at the Wilshire Grand Hotel

      • 3/8 is Bella Napoli--they are generously giving us 20%

    • Enrichment (Krystal)
      • February hosted our Black History Month assembly, and author visit
      • 3/27 will be a STEM assembly       
    • Talent Show (Peter) 
      • Ticket sales close 3/6
      • Wristbands will go home week of the event
      • Wednesday and Thursday will be dress rehearsals 
    • Major Fundraiser (Kate)

      • Tables will be 10 people, you can request to sit with friends
      • Tickets can be reserved online, but will need to be picked up in person, due to NJ laws
      • Open call for volunteers during the day for set-up and the evening of.

      • 3/26 is Kindness Carnival.  Open call for volunteers.

    • Vote to make Spring Social free:

      • Nays: 0
      • Vote was passed-the Spring Social will be free to Oak View families this year!  Thank you!
  • New Business:
    • Proposal from Enrichment Committee to upgrade AV equipment was presented by Krystal Yip.
      • Discussion about proposed equipment.  Peter Fiveland will follow-up with suggestions about equipment and compatibility with existing equipment.
    • Open call for proposals to utilize last year's surplus funds.  Please prepare a proposal for membership voting. 
      • Discussed field trips funds, art teacher equipment.  
      • There was a question about After School Explorers.  We need a chairperson and a committee for this. 
    • A proposal was presented by Ava Martinez on behalf of the Fun Friday Committee: "Fun Friday Proposal: I'm proposing or asking for an additional $750 towards blowups, ice-cream stands, dunk tank, etc.  Ava Martinez"   
  • A motion was brought to the floor to close the March meeting, seconded and the March meeting was closed.
