OVHSA Meeting Minutes, November 1st, 2023
  • President (Joelle Bernhard)   
    • A motion was brought to the floor to vote in the October meeting minutes, was seconded.  The October Meeting Minutes were voted in and the meeting began. 
    • The HSA will be teaming up with Guidance Counselor Ms. Roche on K-Kids community service collections (Food Drive, Animal Shelter, Toy Drive). Stay tuned for more communication about this.  
  • Board of Ed Rep (Phyllis Gerber)  
    • District  
      • Congratulations to all BHS fall sports.  
        • First time in memory that all teams finished at or above .500 winning percentage. 
      • Thank you to the Bloomfield Police Department for partnering with our school for our weekly “Safe Walk to Schools.” The students, staff and community really enjoyed this activity.  
      • Red Ribbon Week was celebrated by all Bloomfield Schools at the end of October  
        • (Red Ribbon Week is the nation's largest and longest-running drug use prevention campaign.)  
      • The schools wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month with various celebrations throughout the district. Thank you to all who made these events possible. 
      • The Bloomfield Board Of Education and Administration celebrated the district’s distinction of being named a “High Performing District” by the NJDOE after the latest QSAC review. Thank you to all stakeholders that made this possible. 
      • The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act requires that the week beginning with the first Monday in October of each year be designated as a “Week of Respect” in New Jersey.  
        • All Bloomfield schools proudly participate in order to recognize the importance of character education, to help prevent harassment, intimation or bullying. 
    • BHS/BMS  
      • BHS Band are 2023 State Champs!! Scoring a 94.8 against 14 other bands 
      • Congrats to all of our newly inducted National Honor Society members 
        • Bloomfield middle school held their annual National Junior Honor Society ceremony. Congratulations to all new BMS NJHS members.  
      • On-site college visits continue to take place at BHS, including visits from local HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges & Universities)  
      • BMS, in partnership with the BEF, held their annual Bengalthon with all BMS students and all 6th graders.  
        • Thank you to the BEF, Brookdale ShopRite, and Hot Bagels Abroad for sponsoring this great event.  
        • It was certainly a great day to be a Bengal.  
    • Elementary  
      • Thank you to Valley Bank for partnering with Watsessing School to discuss financial literacy education for our students!  
      • Thank you to all school HSA’s for all of the sponsored Halloween activities for our students and staff who celebrate.

    • Question about whether attendance during November breaks are measured to make decisions about the calendar for following year. Other districts close during the week or Election Day and teachers convention.  District needs to meet statute of 180 days and that is why there is not a November break.  Between holidays observed, reserved snow days, we still need to meet all days.

    • Thank you, Oak View families, for your continued support and collaboration for the monthly school-wide assemblies and celebrations

      • Student Council Campaign Week is creating a great buzz in our building! A special note: over 70 student applications were turned in! We are so proud of all the applicants for taking the initiative to serve their community!

      • Teaching and Learning- Congratulations to our entire staff for their hard work, as the SY22-23 NJSLA results indicated: 
        • 85% of students reached proficiency in ELA with a +6% gain 
        • 73% reached proficiency in Math with a +8% gain

    • Question about student council: How was it decided which applicants moved forwarded to elections?  What is the process?  Principal Lo addressed criteria that was examined.  Discussion of communication with parents about process.

    • Teachers were very happy with how Halloween parties were run and how the schedule worked. 
    • Grateful for all assemblies. Diwali assembly hit all teaching points (visual, auditory, but not too loud, tactile,  kinesthetic). 
    • Conferences
      • Google forms will be sent out for parent sign-ups
      • Thursday & Monday will be evening conferences. 
      • Please reach out to teachers if you have any scheduling conflicts.
