OVHSA Meeting Minutes, November 2nd, 2022


  • A motion was brought to the floor to vote the October meeting minutes in.  The vote was passed and the November meeting began.
  • Principal (Mrs. DiTrani) 
    • Caught with Character program/bagel breakfasts has restarted. Next month will focus on “Responsibility.”
    • Halloween parade and parties were a success. Thanks to class parents for volunteering!
    • Tuesday was the Read-A-Thon assembly
    • Tuesday 11/8 is Election Day; all students will be virtual. Instructions and Chrome books will go home with students. K-4 will get Chrome books with changers, 3-4 already have chargers at home
    • Thanks to the Hospitality Committee for the apples and fall spread!
    • Parent/Teacher conferences are this month. If you cannot make it in-person, please let teacher know ASAP. A virtual conference is better than no conference.

      • BHS Key Club members are visiting our third-grade classrooms across the district to deliver valuable Key Traits lessons (Kindness, Empathy, Tolerance and Courage). Please check district social media for this great collaboration among the students
      • Bloomfield HS Band Great performance Marching Bengals! Best performance and score of the season! Second place music, third place guard, & third in class out of twelve bands with our highest score of the season! Congrats BHS Marching Band!
      • BHS Business Department: Successful College and Career Fair held @BHS
      • BMS and BHS Spanish Club: Successfully hosting a wonderful Hispanic Heritage Celebration on 10/20/22. Included parade of nations, poetry, dancing, food, and tons of fun! Thank you to all who helped make this event such a great success.
      • BMS: Congrats to our new NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) Inductees @BMS.
      • Wingman: ALL our schools are successfully participating in our district wide SEL Wingman Initiative. Please check social media for great snapshots of this program in action.

    • Fall Fundraiser (Read-A-Thon) (Kate Wilson):
      • Raised $2200 in 24 hours. Please activate your child’s ReadAThon profile!
      • We use 99 Pledges, which is very private and secure
      • Anyone interested in learning the ropes to take over this fundraiser next year, please reach out to Kate.
      • We are collecting books on the blacktop

      • Registration is closed, but if you would still like to register, please reach out.
      • Practices start on 11/14

      • We are working towards finalizing playground
      • If you have ideas about elements on the playground, please let us know by December
      • Looking for a “house” type of element for the blacktop for ages up to twelve
      • Looking to add more interactive/imaginative play elements, like “storefronts” for playground

  • Votes:
    • Proposal for 2nd Treasurer: Passed unanimously (21 “yays”, 0 “nays”)
      • General OVHSA Executive Board election cycle will take place this spring
      • Executive board convened on 11/1 and determined standing rules for filling a new position created after the initiation of the term, as per Article 5 (Standing Rules):  "When a new executive board position is created at a point more than halfway through the two-year term, the board will appoint an individual to fill the position for the remainder of the term. This will allow the board to ensure that the individual filling the position has adequate experience and is a voting member in good standing at least fourteen (14) calendar days before they are appointed. Individuals who are interested in filling the new executive board position for the following full two-year term can be nominated and voted on during the regularly scheduled HSA board elections."  In response, there were no questions about the Standing Rule at this meeting.           
    • Proposal to replace the Glockenspiel on the playground: Passed unanimously (21 “yays”, 0 “nays”)
      • JB addressed questions about the acts of vandalism, the replacement, and implemented security (cameras)
  • New Business
    • Inquiry about status of bike rack:
      • MDT is looking into putting out a survey to determine how many people are interested and how big bike rack would need to be.
      • MDT is looking into grants
      • Traffic and safety at drop off is an issue
      • Health and wellness committee has already been in contact with Bloomfield PD about safety seminar
    • Inquiry about food drive:
      • Hat and scarf drive was suggestion
      • Toy drive was suggested
      • Postscript: Health and Wellness announce November Food Drive on 11/7
